Nuclear Generating Station
PA & Life Safety Systems
Challenge
Nuclear generating stations operate under the most stringent safety requirements of any facility type. The PA and life safety communication systems must meet CSA N293 — the standard for fire protection at nuclear power plants — which imposes demanding requirements for reliability, redundancy, environmental qualification, and documentation that far exceed those of conventional commercial buildings.
Approach
ITS designed and integrated the public address and life safety systems to CSA N293 and National Fire Code of Canada standards. The design addresses the unique challenges of nuclear environments: high ambient noise from generating equipment, critical areas where communication failure is not tolerable, and regulatory requirements for redundant signal paths and documented failover behaviour. Every design decision was documented to the level required by the nuclear regulatory framework.
Outcome
The nuclear generating station operates with PA and life safety communication systems that meet full CSA N293 compliance, with redundancy and failover architecture designed for the most demanding safety requirements in Canadian infrastructure.
